Martin holds a MSc in Human Geography (Utrecht University, The Netherlands) specialized in regional and urban development, housing and planning, sociology and research methods and techniques, including market research.

After his official retirement in August 2018 from TNO, Martin joined DRIFT as a part-time consultant and researcher. In his work he applies the concepts of transitions and transition management for research as well as policy recommendations in different types of projects concerning all the DRIFT topics. However, cities and their transformations towards sustainability in the broadest sense do have his special interest. Currently his projects are focused on urban and regional circular economy, participatory city making, energy transition, resilience and cultural heritage.

Until his retirement, Martin worked at TNO within the Strategy and Policy Group for 14 years. Prior to that he worked at ICIS in Maastricht together with Jan Rotmans and Derk Loorbach on the theory and practice of transitions and transition management. Before joining ICIS, Martin had 20 years working experience and carried out a large number of research and consultancy projects inside as well as outside The Netherlands, for example in Prague, Brno (Czech Republic) and Wroclaw (Poland).
